The most famous tourist attraction of Bohol is situated in the Municipality of Carmen — the
world renown Chocolate Hills. In 2024, the Province of Bohol was designated as the first and
only UNESCO GLOBAL GEOPARK of the Philippines, showcasing the Chocolate Hills as the
prominent geological site. There are 1,776 of these iconic cone-shaped hills, found only in
Bohol. Unique, all almost of the same shape, these hills were formed from coral deposits with
the aid of the wind, rainwater, and erosion. These quintessential hills are scattered in Carmen and the neighboring towns of Sagbayan, Batuan, Bilar, Valencia, and Sierra Bullones.
For the panoramic view of the Chocolate Hills, tourists must travel to the Chocolate Hills
Complex and climb 220 steps to its highest viewing deck for a breathtaking experience. The
complex also houses a restaurant, pavilion, and souvenir shops. The best viewing time is in
summer when the heat of the sun turns the plants, shrubs, and small trees into a chocolate color.
